If You’ve Tried Everything and Still Struggle- This Is Why
Hey bestie — If you’ve ever sighed, “I’ve tried everything — therapy, diets, tracking, coaching, intuitive eating — and nothing sticks… what’s wrong with me?” take a deep breath.
Nothing is wrong with you.
You’re not unmotivated, too far gone, or the exception.
You’re exhausted from running on a treadmill that never takes you anywhere.
Today we’ll name why the usual approaches haven’t worked long-term — and what you actually need instead.
Why the Things You Tried “Worked”… Until They Didn’t
Plenty of tools can bring short-term relief — but most focus on controlling food or fixing symptoms, not healing the roots.
-
Diets: “Work” only while you can white-knuckle them. When restriction backfires, the cycle returns.
-
General therapy: Powerful, but most clinicians don’t specialise in disordered eating or nervous-system work.
-
Tracking/data: Numbers give information, not peace.
-
Intuitive eating: Incredible — but hard to implement if your nervous system is dysregulated, you’re still secretly afraid of food, or you treat IE like a new diet with nicer branding.
If you don’t address the roots — restriction, dysregulation, body shame, and safety — you’re rearranging furniture in a burning house.
The Real Roots You’ve Been Missing
-
Restriction (physical and mental): Smaller portions than you need, skipping meals “to make up,” carb-policing, food rules — all tell your body food isn’t safe → survival mode → binge.
-
Emotional dysregulation: Stress, loneliness, overwhelm. Food becomes the fastest-acting soothing strategy.
-
Internalised body shame: If worth = smaller body, every fluctuation triggers panic and recommitment to control.
-
Nervous-system patterns: When your body doesn’t feel safe, rules feel safer than attunement. Safety must come first.
My Story (and the Lesson I Learned the Hard Way)
I believed I could fix binge eating by “finally getting my body under control.” I dieted, restricted, and lived in self-hate. I was diagnosed with BED. Eventually, I chose gastric sleeve surgery. I was promised freedom at a goal weight.
But weight loss surgery doesn’t come with:
-
Emotional regulation tools
-
A calmer nervous system
-
Body trust
I got smaller — and more scared. I feared regain. I tightened rules. The binge cycle returned because the roots were untouched. That’s when I learned: you can’t diet or shrink your way to food freedom. You have to heal.
What Actually Works (The Whole Puzzle)
You need all the pieces — not just behaviour change.
-
Nourishment & Rhythm
Stabilise eating so your body stops panicking: consistent meals/snacks, carbs + protein + fat + satisfaction. -
Nervous-System Safety
Daily micro-regulation: breathwork, sunlight, walks, music, earlier bedtimes, boundaries with triggers (scale, feeds, “goal jeans”). -
Mindset Rewiring
Retire “good/bad” food labels, defuse diet-culture thoughts, build body neutrality and self-compassion. -
Support That Gets It
Guidance from someone trained in disordered eating and the messy, lived reality — plus a community that practises grace over perfection.
Quick Self-Check: Are You in the “Fix the Symptom” Loop?
-
“I’ll be ‘good’ tomorrow” after a binge
-
Swapping one plan for another every few weeks
-
Doing IE with secret weight-loss conditions
-
Collecting data (calories, macros, steps) but not feeling calmer
-
Shame spirals after totally human wobble days
If you nodded along, you don’t need to try harder — you need a different map.
